Sleeping With Curly Hair 🌜✨💫

One of the most frequent questions that I get asked by my curly clients is how to sleep with their curls at night. There’s not a one size fits all solution but the technique that works best for you should leave you with minimal frizz and refreshing in the morning.

You can definitely go with the classic satin pillowcase or bonnet options but they didn’t work for me when I was traveling or didn’t feel like wearing something on my head.

My favorite way to sleep at night with my curls is my signature Clipback technique.

I learned while growing out my super short curls I didn’t want to wear a scarf or bonnet because there was more fabric than there was hair on my head. Doing the Clipback works at many lengths varying from short bob to shoulder blade length and beyond.

Here’s my step by step way of taking care of my curls while I sleep. ⬇️

What you’ll need for The Clipback:

  • 1-3x alligator clips 🐊

  • The shorter the hair the fewer clips you’ll need

Step 1: Divide your hair into 3 sections.

  • Starting from the top and working your way down divide your hair so they fit easier into the clips.

  • Your sections don’t have to be clean but you do want to be careful when separating your curls or you’ll create more frizz.

Step 2: Pull one section of hair into a loose pony and twist

  • ‘Loose’ is the key word so you don’t create breakage or give yourself tension alopecia by repeatedly doing this style every night.

  • Twist the hair either way — it’s just helping keep every curl in place. Particularly, if you have layers in your hair.

Step 3: Clip your pony where it lays comfortably

  • Experiment with clip placements. I suggest clipping wherever you lay your head the least. I move around a lot while I sleep so center going up the back of my head works best for me.

Step 4: Repeat for the remaining sections

  • For my longer hair curlies I recommend twisting and laying the longer strands of hair around the other clips.

  • Figure out the placement that works best for you.

Step 5: Secure each section of hair then shake

  • To make sure every section is secure I usually try to shake out the clips and see if any hair falls out.

  • Re-clip any hair that falls out unless it won’t bother you while you sleep.

Voila!

This is also a great way for my short to medium long haired curlies to wear their hair during workouts.
