An Admission With Vision

Here’s a look at my admissions essay for my admittance into the cosmetology program at Aveda Institute Dallas.

“My personal definition of success starts with the ability to provide for myself and my family while also maintaining a balanced life of emotional, creative and monetary satisfaction. I ultimately want to be able to pursue my passions as my profession. Creativity, art and color are the core of my passions. I pride myself in being a hard worker, and make an effort to challenge myself creatively through music, dance and design. My personal formula for success begins with setting goals, meeting them and pushing myself to experience new ideas and designs across several mediums including costumes, special fx work, and graphic design. My background is drawn from many art forms, all of which I’ve been fortunate enough to pursue as hobbies, even some professionally! I’m excited for this opportunity to expand my creative and entrepreneurial portfolio.

One the best examples of my pursuit towards my goals and passions can be seen through my proudest accomplishment. Upon completing my goal towards my performing arts degree, I was able to perform at the Tony Award winning Dallas Theater Center in my all time favorite musical In The Heights. I was then successfully cast as “Dragon” in a production of Shrek at Casa Manana. My dream of performing and singing on a Broadway stage has opened up my life to so many incredible performance opportunities. The passion I have towards that dream has also pushed me outside of my comfort zone and allowed me to meet the artistic and passionate people I’ve come to call friends across my musical theater career. I am most proud of going back to my musical theater career after needing an emergency spinal fusion at the age of 21. After learning about the severity of my condition I had to immediately stop going to school, working and performing so that I could take care of myself first physically, and I would later learn emotionally and mentally. Going through such a serious medical process and surgery really made me see health and wellness in a different way. I learned through that experience that life can literally change over night, because of this I started to include more empathy, positivity and gratitude in my daily life and attitude. I rediscovered my new bionic body post-surgery and was forced to redefine my own personal definition of beauty.

Beauty to me is perpetually evolving. At this juncture in my life beauty to me is the radiating joy and happiness from someone whose experiencing life as their true self. Radical self love and self expression are, in my opinion, the ultimate beauty. Anyone can magnify their natural beauty with the use of products and makeup but people who are truly beautiful inside are kind, caring, empathetic and passionate people who radiate those same values on the outside. They see the world as it is and full of perfectly imperfect people who are all just trying to make the world a better place.

When I’ve finished training in cosmetology at Aveda Institute I hope to contribute a new wave of radical self love and expression. As a curvy, curly headed Latina I want to inspire other women to embrace their natural beauty and provide them with the encouragement to amplify it in whatever way they see fit. I want to incur positive change and diversity for the industry and be a part of the natural hair movement that has already begun.”
